Top-rope solo

The rope is already fixed above you. You track it with progress-capture on your harness. That is not lead solo.

Manufacturer box

Petzl has not built a device just for this. Their fixed-rope note is for climbing a line already anchored above you, without loading it except to rest. They recommend two independent systems so one mistake does not drop you. They do not recommend a single ascender. Self-belay on one or two fixed ropes.

GRIGRI / NEOX remain unauthorized for self-belay. Notice.

Procedure

Top-rope solo has a fixed line above you
  1. Build or use a top anchor that will hold a downward fall. Redundant. No extension you did not plan.
  2. Fix one rope — or two, if you want the systems fully independent. Dynamic rope (EN 892) for a climbing fall. Do not TR-solo on a static haul line if you might fall onto slack.
  3. Two captures: two different devices, or one device plus backup knots / a second grab. Petzl prefers two different tools so you do not forget both cams twice.
  4. Keep the systems from interfering. Two Micro Traxions stacked on one locker can foul each other — read the notice for which compact pulleys they allow on one carabiner.
  5. Weight-test at the ground. Both cams closed. Then climb. If you rest, you are hanging on the captures; that is expected.
  6. To come down, you need a descent plan that is not “defeat both cams.” Lower on a second line, or rappel a different rope. Do not invent a mid-air release.

When this system is the wrong tool

  • There is no fixed line above you — that is lead rope solo.
  • You only have one grab and no backup.
  • The rope runs over a sharp edge you cannot pad. A cut fixed line is a ground fall.
  • You want to lead. A progress-capture on a slack lead rope can cut the sheath.

Self-check this system
